I first was introduced to the poetry of Jeffrey McDaniel in the late 1990s and -- like every other poet I knew -- I became an instant fan. He released three books with SF's Manic D Press that showcased his quirk, his bravado and his singularly poetic voice: an instantly recognizable thing which is damn near impossible to duplicate. In 2008, McDaniel published "The Endarkenment," his first book of poetry on an university press and a departure from the looser, spangled verse of his early collections. This book is grounded, adult even, but without losing the McDaniel's unique poetic qualities.
The poems gleam with equals parts awe and heartbreak. He talks with an earned candor about his childhood, his alcoholic past and the birth of his daughter, bending common words and phrases until they become clean, complex instruments for his vision. The book isn't without its humor -- "Boner Etiquette" being an obvious stand-out -- but it really shines when McDaniel takes a hard look into the darker parts of his life.
Highly recommended for fans of McDaniel who want to see the next part of this amazing poet's evolution.

I don't buy many single-author books of poetry and when I do, I am rarely as happy with the work as I am with The Endarkenment.
The poet is talented and shows an easy mastery of the language of simile and metaphor. While the work is dark, it does not get there by being cheap or maudlin. Rather it maintains a clean, hard edge that is full of honesty.
His poems avoid the traps of self-referential obscurity, and pretense, and his absolutely masterful images unfold before the reader easily.
This book is a lot of fun, you should pick it up.
Do some poetry.
and, boy, was I gasping!! Quirky and funny, but still able to be serious and introspective. Definitely different than a lot of stuff I've read, that is to say, not seemingly stuffy or pretentious. It's just the book of poetry I've been searching for. Couldn't recommend it any more.
If you want to be dazzled by a command of the English language, this book is for you.
If you don't mind having a stranger put his finger in your guts, this book is for you.
Wonderful poetry. Thank goodness Jeffery McDaniel is writing.
Jeffrey McDaniel's poetry has a manic quality that trips into the surreal and yet he can be rooted in the most brutal realism. While McDaniel has been known in poetry circles for a while before this book as his previous books had been released by Manic D, but this is his first academic press poetry volume and his themes have matured and darkened here. Sobriety's lack and manic struggle run through the entirety of the book Failed relationships and fatherhood, drugs, surreal imaginary, sexual tension, the problems of the South. His style feels a bit like Dean Young or Tony Hoagland in his metaphors, but his mood is darker. Some particularly stand-out poems are "Oblivion Chiclets"and "Air Empathy." Strongly recommended.
